macs on a wireless infrastructure

Hi folks

 

Was just wondering if any school is using macs with software such as final cut and logic with a wireless infrastructure.

 

These are as I am led to believe highly intensive apps and was just wondering how they would respond transferring data through a wireless point.

 

A project which my school may undertake is having a multimedia suite to use apple laptops on a wiress infrastructure. I dont expect it to work well but was wondering if anyone had this already in place and could give me a few pointers.

Pretty mcuh most work that you are doing should be done on the local machine. Scratch disks defintiely should be ...

 

I know you can get away with talking to a nearby stroage box / server on 100/1000 base network but would not recommend it.

 

Even if you work locally and copy back tot he server ... just imagine that you have a 4GB project that you are copying back over wireless ... even over N ... and then mulitply that by 10 people doing the same thing.

Have to agree. Multimedia and wireless should not be in the same sentence.

 

When it comes to large file transfers hardwired is always best. Also think about where your server is situated in relation to the media suite. Consider putting a dedicated machine on the same switch - and also consider gigabit to the desktop - you will need it!

Thirded. Bad idea. A gigabit on the same wired network might be ok. Get the desktops you'll appreciate the extra power.

Nope. We prefer to do things that actually work.

Imagine trying to pull a whole melon through a drinking straw without harming the straw or the melon.

It won't "work well", it won't work at all. Wireless is absolutely not viable for shipping the sort of data involved in a timely manner. Don't get me wrong, it's great technology at what it does, and I'm using a wireless connection to write this reply.

 

But "what it does" is allow people quick convenient connections to browse the web, check email and swap around the odd file. I wouldn't run any classroom over a wireless connection, let alone one which I knew would be straining the bandwidth of a wired connection to its limits.

Macs don't cope well when the users home folder (and preferences) get disconnected, so wireless in a managed enviroment could be a huge pain.

 

To get an idea, log in to a mac with a user with an afp home folder, run adobe apps, or others.

 

Unplug the cable and wait for the spinning ball of doom
