[sims] Sims on Win7 install error [SOLVED]

Hello all,

 

I have looked in the forums but find nothing that helps me.

 

On win7 32bit I run simsinst, click install and get this error

 

Sims Installer was unable to write to the Sims application shared directory supplied as S:/Sims

 

If I go into the settings and click browse the S drive is not listed only c:/ d:/ and a few network drives but not the S drive.

 

The odd thing is the drive is mapped in explorer, its how I ran simsinst in the first place.

 

I have tried re-booting and checked firewall / UAC settings.

 

Any thoughts?

It might still be a UAT thing. Try creating a simple text file in S/SIMS and see if there is a security message.

 

What server is S/SIMS on? (ie 2008?)

I was just about to post this - No error messages when I created txt file and sims is on server 2003std.

 

When the drives appeared in sims options. Odd little glitch.

I test to know will be to turn UAT off for a moment and try again. Not suggesting as a course of action, but will rule it out. I had a few issues like this when we first tried W7 with SIMS last year.

turn off uac and it installs fine it usually means the "administrator" user has no access to s/f drive

well the problem came back after the install at the point it asks for the connect.ini location. No S drive to browse too and didn't except me typing it in.

 

S drive is still working fine in explorer and did a test install on xp and worked fine.

If you copy the file manually from S:\sims\connect.ini (I assume that's where it is), to C:\program files\sims\sims .net (or whatever it's set to), does it work?

do you have read/write permissions for:

 

S:\SIMS\?

C:\Program Files\SIMS & sub folders ?

C:\Windows - for SIMS.ini

Do the install as administrator and its fine. Also do first run as administrator too, the actual administrator account not any admin account. Then the correct permissions are there.

 

We had issues where even the domain admin could not write to the C:\program files folder. Turning off UAC helps, also right click on icon and properties, then from compatibility tab choose run as admin. This fixed all issues for us, it's a workaround at least until permissions are sorted properly.

The way I install on a win 7 machine is to run a command prompt as administrator (right click on command prompt). Then use the following command to map the drive:

net use S: \\sims\path

You should able to install SIMS.

After a reboot use the same command & run sims to get the connect.ini file

Map the drive for the user & it should work.

You can make the S: drive stick using the command prompt if you use the following switch after the command above

/persistent:yes

You will be asked for username & password.

Never had a problem the s drive is maped by GPO and it installed fine on win 7 64bit.

i just go to S drive sims folder > installs > and runs simsinst.

Found out that the connect.ini had not updated to the new SQL2008 path. Don't understand how it would stop the Sims installer finding mapped drives but it works after making the change.
