We use exchange 2010 and had a speight of students emailing the everyone and "all teachng staff" groups with imature emails, although sophos pure message blocks out profanities staff are getting peeved!

I was wonder how others overcome this problem, is there a way to block students from sending mails to groups? or even better not show them the list of groups in the first place?

This is for 2007, but it should be similar.

Open Exchange management console.

Open up Recipient Configuration > Distribution Groups.

Choose whichever group you want to lock down, right click, properties.

Go to the "mail flow settings" tab, select Message Delivery Restriction and click properties. You can then restrict who can send emails to the group.

EDIT: And make sure a bat is taken to the little darling sending the emails.

We set a global restriction on students that they are not allowed to send to more than 5 recipients - in Exchange Powershell run the command:

Get-Mailbox –Database “<>\Students Database" -ResultSize Unlimited |Set-Mailbox -RecipientLimits 5

Assuming of course that your students are in a separate database to staff.

Make the groups security groups and limit who can send to all staff.

We also use approvals.

Thanks this works for us a treat as we do have seperate databases, also found the option in properties of distribution group to hide group from exchange address lists

What type of group do you setup so that students get added to this setting automatically when you add a new student to AD during the year? (then forget to do the restriction process)

When we add a new user to AD, we need to go into exchange to set up their mailbox anyway, so setting the max recipients, and a few other tweaks is just part of that job.
