Sharepoint Room Booking & Helpdesk Web Parts

Hi,

 

We have our own sharepoint server and wish to set up additional sites for Room Booking and a IT Helpdesk.

We've looked at the free microsoft templates but they dont offer the required functionality.

Has anyone got any alternatives that they use within sharepoint?

I don't know of any decent web parts for this, remember that without spending big sharepoint is just a collection of lists and repositories.

 

However, also remember that you can use the web page (web) part to display another page or site within the page on sharepoint, I used this successfully to make it appear to integrate several 3rd parts apps that will accomplish the tasks you want.

 

A good room booking software is: http://www.roombookingsystem.co.uk

A good (free) helpdesk software is SpiceWorks.

 

Both are web based, so you can just 'integrate' the required pages into sharepoint.

If you have 2010 you can do some simple work flows linked to lists. A lot better than 2007. Using SharePoint designer you can start a workflow then if you have visio you can visualise your workflow. Those 2 really work well with 2010. Remember Your list can have a calendar view.

You have to have Sharepoint server 2010 enterprise for that feature I believe. It is certainly not in the Foundation version.

Unfortunately you are correct. I know its a cost issue but you certainly get more for your bucks. 2010 allows users to do more out of the box with little code needed.

Definately, not knocking it at all, I really like SP 2010 for that reason, I am not a coder, but a builder!

 

However if workflows are your thing then it pays for itself in no time. I was at a sharepoint seminar 3 weeks ago where this was demonstrated, truely excellent feature! I have the slides somewhere!

Using 2010, SharePoint designer and visio you can create workflows. You draw it out in Visio. Then add with SharePoint designer then upload. Youtube has some excelent demos.

Looks great. Plenty of time spend there getting the look just right, I wish I had that sort of time on my projects!
