Database Convertor

Does anybody know of a good, free bit of sofware that will convert a dbf file (unfortunately I do not know what version of dbf) to anything I can get into MSAccess?

 

I have tried pulling them straight into MSAccess and Excel but they are an unrecognised format.

 

Any ideas gratefully recieved as our report writing software has gone mental and this may be my only hope of retrieving 550 students reports!!

OpenOffice Base can import dbf files.

I did not have any joy when I tried OpenOffice, but I think my version is quite old - I will try getting hold of a newer version.

I design software to import data into MS SQL Server and have found that the easiest way is to convert it to CSV format first then import that file.

 

Search for "DBF2CSV" and "Perl" and you will get the freeware version that I found to be the best. It can be run from a ".BAT" oir ".CMD" file and a sample is provided. Access should then be able to import from the CSV file(s) without problems.

 

Due to the generic import I was writing, I had to delete the first row of the imported data which contains the DBF field names after importing though.
