finney_83 Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I'm not sure if this is the right place or not to post this? We are currently looking for a printer server but with a built-in switch. A perfect example would be the Linksys PSUS4 but for the life of me, I can't find them anywhere, (maybe discontinued). We want to be able to plug the print server into the network point thats available, and then to plug the PC into an available port on the print server, (then obviously the USB printer will plug directly into the print server). Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations on what print server we should get. We require seven, so i'm looking at the up to £60 mark. Cheers.

If that's the case I'd stick with standard off-the shelf print servers, forget the switch aspect, and use a pair of RJ45 splitters instead... RJ45 Cable Economiser: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

finney_83 Posted October 18, 2010 Author Posted October 18, 2010 How about using the PC as a print server? Good thinking, but I probably should have explained in more detail in my original post. Basically, we have four classrooms that have just been converted over to Thin Clients. Each PC originally had a local USB printer attached to it, but obviously now the machines are Thin Clients, the local printers no longer work, hence my search for print servers. Amazon.com sell the Linksys PSUS4 but they won't ship oversees due to warranty restrictions with that product.

I believe local devices work with Citrix but we are using a Thin Client image from a company called One Planet Desktop. They are a fairly new company but unfortunately their images don't work with local devices. So as you can probably imadgine we've had difficutlies with printers, eBeams, Data loggers, even some USB pen drives.

Axel Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 How many printers do you need per classroom? Maybe mixing Ultra Thin Clients with your recycled PCs would work. For example an M80 has 4 USB ports - one for a keyboard, one for mouse, leaving two for printers. Any users would be able to access the printers attached to any terminal. (using the embedded LPD print server). Same solution would also let you access memory sticks. In terms of being green, a thin client uses 5 watts max - a fraction of what your PCs will be using What country are you in ?
