Iplayer and Youtube

I'm struggling to get our OSx 10.6 machines to play content from Iplayer and Youtube. They just don't play the video. All content is via a proxy which works with all windows machines.

 

I've tried updating to the latest version of Flash, Shockwave and Air, but that hasn't worked.

 

Anything else I can try? The proxy isn't blocking anything, and the Macs themselves are playing flash content on other websites?

As test would be to try chrome as flash etc is embedded (in windows at least) I believe in chrome to ensure its not flash thats corrupt.

I've tried Firefox and Safari, haven't tried Chrome yet.

Hi I have the same problem also I've tried Chrome works ok with pc not Mac side of the Macbook and body any ideas?

Have you installed the silverlight update? Solved it on one of my macs

Thanks for the reply My situation is that when in the school the macbooks when booted in Mac os x dont play video clips on BBC etc when i boot to xp works fine ? Tried my Work Macbook Pro at home works fine in Mac OS X take it to the school doesn't any ideas ? School has a Isa server etc

The latest Flash Player "Preview" release (v10.2.161.23) might be worth a try?

My macbook pro works fine at home but when i try in the school and access video clips via BBC doesn't work get the message 'this content doesn't seem to be working' etc ?? where as pcs play content fine?

Macs don't use the same proxy for all connection types by default. You have to specify it. Maybe the proxy settings need to be applied to all connection types i.e. FTP, Streaming proxy, Gopher proxy etc.

One thing, do you have a gateway ip for your network connection?

In the olden days I knew several admins that didnt put the gateway ip in dhcp and left it up to the proxy to handle web requests.

Slim chance but you never know.

We have the same problem specifically related to flash videos on iplayer and youtube. We found it to be the proxy causing the issue (weird i know) as luckily we have a direct connection to test it out on. Normal flash content appears to be perfeclty fine. We have exactly the same issue on our linux clients and iplayer / youtube (non flash versions) on the ipad. I havent got a solution though sorry.

 

Yes windows works fine for us too.

yep still having the problem checked proxies,gateway etc still no joy!

Google Chrome on the Mac includes Flash Player too.

Another suggestion (for YouTube at least) would be to install the YouTube5 extension for Safari and join the HTML5 beta. If this works, it may help work out where the problem is.

Just resurrecting this old thread.

 

Still cannot get iplayer working on macs (through a proxy). Windows machines work fine on both IE and Firefox but nothing works on the macs.

 

Set the proxy server for every protocol but it doesn't seem to even try and hit the proxy.

 

I guess iplayer on the macs is just a non starter - if it works, it works. If it doesn't forget it!

My guess would be its your ISP firewall. Windows uses port 1935 to stream video, however I'm 99% certain that iOS 4 and Mac OS X uses a different port, but I know not which one. If anyone finds out which port it is, I would be very grateful as it would mean my iPad wouldn't be crippled in school

What proxy have you got or use, as above firewall ?

 

Also on OS X ( by default it should be disabled ) but worth while checking if it is disabled , do you have an OS X Server to push down restrictions ( if so is this forcing the firewall to be enabled or anything like that ) ?

 

Not sure if its related at all but I do know there was at least one thread where someone was having issues trying to get iphone or ipads working and had to add a specific itunes URL to the proxy / firewall server so as to allow them to communicate correctly and work with iTunes for the App Store etc

 

All latest software updates on the mac ie 10.6.5 I believe is the latest.

 

Also I presume you have DNS, Domain ( FQDN ) etc configured in network settings and how have you got proxy settings configured.

Mac OS X also uses port 1935 (for iPlayer), but should fall back to using port 80 if 1935 is blocked. You can check this yourself with the LSOF command in Terminal (shown in blue below).

Have you tried the 'big screen' version of iPlayer? It's specifically designed for iPad's.

If it is a case of Flash not using your proxy settings - pretty likely - you can check that by using a third party proxy tool like Proxifier - Bypass firewall and proxy, tunnel connections through an HTTPS and SOCKS proxy (free demo) to send all the browser traffic (including Flash) via your chosen proxy. If it works via that then it'll be Flash ignoring the proxy settings, doesn't get you much further forward, but at least narrows down the problem

Out of interest, have you tried uninstalling Flash Player completely? One way you can do this is go into your /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder and delete the three files listed below.

NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave

 

To re-install Flash Player, download this file, open the DMG and then double-click the installer.
