nsherin Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Hiya all, I've after a laptop with one of Intel's ULV processors. Having decided specs and a budget, I've narrowed it down to two models, a Toshiba Satellite T110-121 and a Dell Inspiron 11z. The Toshiba is £299.95 from dabs.com and includes a free USB optical drive. I can get the Dell for £310 from a local supplier and it includes a 500GB hard drive, but no optical drive. From a purely cosmetic point of view, the Toshiba is a nice glossy black all over, whereas the Dell is white (black surrounds around the keyboard and screen). If I buy the Toshiba, I'll need to upgrade the hard drive (easily done) as I need more capacity, but I'll add a 7200RPM drive for better performance. If i buy the Dell, I'll need an optical drive, so either way, it is swings and roundabouts cost-wise as the optical drive or hard drive are similar price-wise. Which of the two brands would you guys pick? I've put loads of Toshibas in service at work and they've been very robust. Do any of you guys forsee adding a 7200RPM drive to the Toshiba being likely to cause heat problems? Would a 5400RPM drive be a better fit in terms of heat? I've got till Monday to make a decision - it may be that my local computer supplier can't get any more stock of the Dell machines, as they are open box, so my decision may have been made for me, but assuming I have the option, I'd appreciate any advise. Thanks, Neil
rdsc Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Haven't any experience of either of these I'm afraid but just seen that MicroDirect have open box 11Z - CELERON 743 2GB 500GB for £270 inc VAT which seems like a good price.

happydappy Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Hello Neil, I had the same dilemma, except, for me it was between the Toshiba T110-121 and a Acer Timeline laptop. I’m going to go for the Toshiba and hopefully buy it today. Juts wondering, which laptop did you buy? Thanks
TopBanana Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 both Tosh and Dell have great build quality so hard to say but as far as the aesthetics i would say the tosh wins
MYK-IT Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Been using the Toshiba Satellite T110-121 for around a month now, pleasantly surprised just how good it works. Battery life is brilliant and good build quality. Remember the 3 year education warranty is only ~ £25.
