Project for broken netbook

Hi

 

Got a 1 year old aspire one with 1.5gb ram and 160gb hdd i think? Anyway the screen has gone and the lid hinge gone. Just thinking of using this as media centre job for at the side of the TV.

 

Now i know this might sound stupid.... But could i put it into some kind of case to make it look prettier? Just thinking of getting one of the mini ITX cases and putting the motherboard tray bit in without the other stuff i dont need and getting a vga to HDMI converter. I know it might sound stupid but was thinking i could easily convert this to a boxee box or XMBC. Or at a push Win7 media centre....

No reason why not. All sorts of things you could do with similar effect. How about going for the "wtf" look by buying a £10 freeview box from Tesco, clearing out the innards and slapping that all in there It'll be no less haphazard than the mini ITX as it'll be entirely custom still. Perhaps you've something existing you can fit it into - combi VCR/DVD's have plenty of room in for that sort of malarky

Just make sure it's well ventilated - perhaps if you can introduce some airflow perhaps build in the power supply.

When I get a weekend to do it, I intend to remove my media centre from its mini ATX case and build it into my CRT telly

Ha ha yes just thought i'd wire up the power button and re-route the vga and audio to the back of box / case and then thats it it would look spot on. Oh yes and add a media centre controller. Sure it would be a cracker. Just dont want to either get a new screen cos it would be loads and i dont really use it except online video watching and it would be spot on to catch up on iplayer and see saw tv and what not downstairs on the 42" samsung...

Sounds a bit weird. The lineup would be Sky HD, black wii, PS3 and errmmm a card box box.

there are issues with fire conformity

 

The chap who designed the Recompute case reckons otherwise - cardboard catches fire at a high temperature (you can cook pizzas in ovens on cardboard sleeves, after all) and can be coated to make it more fire-proof. The crinkly bits in corrugated cardboard act as fluted air vents, cooling the machine.

or wven if your entertainment unit has a draw why not fix it inside that so its 100% invisible maybe just alter the draw so that the front hinges down rather than pulls open (at least initially)
