Drop in exchange replacement Zimbra has a major upgrade released.

90 new features and 1000+ bugfixes.

Did I mention it's free ;)

What's New in Zimbra Collaboration Suite 4.5

Many significant new features have been added to ZCS 4.5 based on feedback from the Zimbra Community. We focused on three main areas:

* Communications hub for End-users

* More control for Administrators

* Exposing ZCS to a wider audience

Centralized communications in the ZCS Web Client

* Aggregate external POP email accounts

* Use Mail Identities to automatically choose different signatures or 'from' addresses

* Create personalized distribution lists from your own contacts

Easier and more flexible administration

* Ability to specify higher security requirements on end-user passwords

* Domain administrators can now set mailbox quotas

* Service providers can set mailbox account limits per domain

* Manage account backup and restore as well as Zimlet deployment from the Administration Console

ZCS for a wider audience

* Read email in basic HTML mode

* New operating systems: Ubuntu, VMware, rPath, and Mandriva

Other features

* Zimbra Mobile now supports "push" email to devices

* Support for Tasks in Microsoft Outlook

* Delegate email and calendar access in Microsoft Outlook

* Mail archiving and search (beta)

@Midget, let me know if you decide to - I have a couple of customisations to filter emails for bad words and have written a script to autocreate users from AD.

That sounds brilliant, I'd be very interested in having a look at those, thanks alot

enclosed (PDF), I did this work a while ago and I've not looked at the documentation since - being a slacker, I changed some paths too but forgot to document it. :oops:

The Python code at the end might be a bit scrappy to some of you - I don't have that much experience and am self-taught :oops: , if anybody wants to improve it feel free - but please post modifications so others can benefit.

- Something like deleting old user accounts no longer in AD would be a nice mod ;)

I just did the upgrade from 4.05 to 4.5 on a test and it went fine - needed to copy the modified master.cf file from backup to /optpt/zimbra/postfix/conf/master.cf to get hte filter working after upgrades

My method was to do a complete restore onto another system tehn pull out the data, which is kind of cheating and is also a PITA. That link looks interesing though, I was under the impression it was only possible to do that with the paid for version, so thanks.

I'm curious as to just how easy this is to install and setup on a linux system but more than anything how it compares to Exchange when it comes to Outlook syncronisation.

I'm wondering if this would be a good system for me to use for my own work and to help organise support for multiple schools..

Anyone got a net facing setup that they could let me have a demo account on to play with (I'm on static IP if that helps).

I found Zimbra very easy to setup, the entire package is inclusive and installs into /opt/zimbra. I don't know about outlook MAPI sync as we only use the OSS version( I suspect IMAP and POP are fine though), but there is a zimbra client that can be used if you don't want to use outlook/any other email client or the web client.
