Backup Tape Device

Right, with my ongoing saga of NAS drives (to be fair i havent spent hours at one time on this) I want to look for another way to backup.

 

I liked using tapes at my last school so wondering if thats the way to go.

 

So could someone recommend a drive (external) or explain to me what i need to be looking for.

 

I think a full backup is a few hundred gig.

 

Do these things come at a resonable-ish price? Not talking thousands for one of those autoloader thingy bobbies...

I'm still using a Ultrium 3 drive - but these are still quite expensive. I did have an old SCSI one [ Ultrium 1 ] around somewhere - if I find it you are welcome to it - problem is actually finding it - i may have chucked it when I was having a clear out over the summer.....

FYI - its an HP StorageWorks Ultrium 230

 

Quite limiting on the backup storage though - 200GB compressed - so it may not suit your requirements.....

Personally, I'm glad to be free of tapes. The darn things are expensive, need replacing regularly and you discover they're unreadable at the most unfortunate times.

 

For my small school NAS is so much better, but I realise it doesn't suit everyone. We may be small, but our site is large and the NAS are in a building a good hike away from the building where the servers are.

I really cant decide Elsie. I just havent had much success with NAS's so far.

I'm current reviewing an Overland iSCSI device (SnapServer 110). They have a range of these of which the Snap Server 110 is the entry level model and can be brought with up to 2TB storage, and if you are having issues with NAS backup they may be the way to go. They are cheap (you'll have to wait for pricing though as I'm still waiting), and as such may work out more cost effective than a tape drive, as well as being far more connectable than NAS boxes, especially for backup (this device can also be used as NAS too). Hopefully the review should be up next week once Net-Ctrl give me some pricing.

I seem to remember you having problems with your NAS backups - I was using Freenas as a backup once using just a basic NT Backup command line to get the data over - the system states I did seporate. What software were you using for the backup ?

I do have Backup Exec on another server, but there is some licensing issue where it has to be on the machine being backed up otherwise you need remote licenses or some such nonsense. I dont have the media to move it over at the moment either....

Thats where iSCSI is a winner as it appears, and is classed, as a local drive

Freenas supports iSCSI.......

Never set it up on it though - but it seems straight forward. With our 8TB SAN I put in over the summer I'm still debating or not to setup a backup on there along side the current tape one I have setup.....
