Data Recovery

I know there are data recovery questions on edugeek and else where but wanted to ask a fresh question as there are so many opinions about this that I wanted some solid suggestions

 

I was currently / recently looking at R Studio either network or the technicians license as this allows me to ( or should allow me to ) recover data from macs / windows / etc

 

Just wanted to know if there were any other products that were like this ref covering multi platforms and do they allow you to create a bootable cd / dvd and attach an ext hdd in any shape or form ie USB, Firewire, eSATA etc and recover the data to the externally attached hdd or how do these work

 

Also if anyone has better suggestion(s) I am open to them

RStudio is always my first port of call, however there is better mac recovery software for quick recoveries if you have access to a mac (don't remember the name) else stellar phoenix is also good.

WinHEX is also a very good piece of kit if you're a more advanced user

 

If you can only have 1 tool, then RStudio would be the one I'd go for.

I have a mac @ home, would be handy if you could find out the name for the Mac data recovery app that would be handy

 

Also is there much difference between the network version and the technicians version feature wise??

 

As there is a big jump in price between the 2 versions

Mainly seems to be down to restrcitions on number of machines you are able to install it on, i.e technicians licence you can install it wherever you may need it.

what about the likes of runtime.org with runtime ntfs / runtime fat - although they dont do mac recovery software so the R studio suite is looking like a winner at the minute

 

Never used R Studio so can anyone shed some light on how it works ie is it a bootable dos type data recovery thing where by you attach external storage to the same machine or is all of it software that runs on the OS whether it be Mac OS, Windows etc ??

you install it onto A N Other machine, you connect the hard drive from the machine you want to recover (or do it via the network) and scan the hard drive and recover to the place you want to recover it to. You should NEVER install ANYTHING onto a hard drive you want to recover from.

What about creating an image of the drive before trying or attempting the data recovery - does it have to be an imaging util that does bit by bit imaging so everything is replicated across to a working hard drive ?

for imaging the drive i can only recommend either EnCase or WinHEX to write to an image file.

 

or a drive to drive replica using one of hundreds of DOS Based HDD replicas (MHDD coming to mind off the top of my head, and there is one on Hiren's bootcd)
