Is it possible to create a Wireless profile in windows via the registry or via scripting?

I would like to create a profile with SSID, Authentication method etc, that can just run on visitors laptops.

Under Vista, 7 and XP SP3 you can use netsh and an xml config file, just tried it on my laptop and it seems to work alright:

Simple Method to Export Wireless Network Profile – Windows Vista

You could put the appropriate command in a batch file or CMD file on a usb key along with the XML and they would just need to double click it.

or use this:

It's working well with the Symantec software! Cheers.

Method 1 - Windows 7 / Vista

You can create and deploy Wireless Profiles with the netsh command. First you need a Laptop that has the profiles already created (manually), then you can gather the profile.

List all the profiles with

netsh wlan show profiles

Then create an XML configuration file

netsh wlan export profile name="profile" folder="c:\profiles"

Note: The folder must already exist.

Now you can add the profile by copying the XML file to another machine via USB / CD and running

netsh wlan add profile filename="profile.xml" user=all

You can use the above command in a .cmd file for ease of use.

Method 2 - Windows XP

You can use Symantec's WLAN.exe command to capture and deploy profiles.

First Enumerate Interfaces

wlan ei

Interface 0:

GUID: 89762a5d-bc6b-4ac6-8cf3-b0462b2bafef

Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection - Teefer2 Miniport

State: "disconnected"

Command "ei" completed successfully.

Get Profile List

wlan gpl 89762a5d-bc6b-4ac6-8cf3-b0462b2bafef

Get Profile (profile name is case sensitive)

wlan gp 89762a5d-bc6b-4ac6-8cf3-b0462b2bafef Imperial-WPA

Copy WLAN and your XML file to the new laptop and get the GUID

wlan ei

Finally Deploy the Profile

wlan.exe sp profile.xml

Automating Deployment

You can use the following Script to automatically capture the GUID and deploy the profile. Name the .bat file the same as the .xml file. eg. profile.bat

@echo off

echo Grabbing WLAN Interface...

For /F "skip=2 tokens=1,2" %%A IN ('wlan.exe ei') Do If "%%A"=="GUID:" set Interface=%%B

echo Adding wlan SSID %~n0

wlan.exe sp %Interface% %~n0.xml

set Interface =

echo.

echo SSID: %~n0 has been configured!

pause
