Excel - locking split screen

I'm sure I used to know how to do this:rolleyes:

 

On Excel 2003, how do you "lock" the split screen so that the first three (say) columns and rows stay in view all the time? in a way that nobody can change it?

 

I know how to split it by dragging up the little mark at the top (or right) of the scroll bar, but how do you make it permanent?

You could use freeze panes, click in the cell in the top left corner of the moveable section (ie: for first three rows/columns to stay same click in cell D4), then on the menu bar go to Window then click freeze panes. Users will not beable to modify the position of the frozen sections via the main screen, although they will be able to go to Window then click Unfreeze Panes to revert it back to normal.
