Dunno what's going on at the moment but my SAN connection between my ESXi 4 servers and my SUN 7110's seems to have gone mental!!

 

Story is the week before last I had some time off and on the Thursday night we had a very short powercut in work but only in one building. It was during a nasty storm so could have been a lightning strike, either way it took the 16a breaker out of the air con system thus the server room overheated and most servers shut themselves down.

 

I got in on Friday morning and got the air con back on made sure every server was shut down and let the room cool down. When I got it all back up and running my ESXi boxes could not see my SAN's. Now I have a SAN VLAN and bonded links into my Procurve core switch - just since that episode I can not get the ESXi boxes to see my 7110's no matter what. I've even tried pulling the entier SAN LAN off onto a seperate 8 port gigabit switch and still I can not add the NFS shares on to the ESXi boxes. If i plug a laptop into the SAN network I can ping all ESX and all 7110 boxes using their IP addresses.

 

I've got round it by using the curriculum network link for NFS traffic but this is far from ideal.

 

Carrying on troubleshooting but I just wanted to vent as this is so random It's been working solidly for a year and now just refuses to play ball even tho no settings have changed!!!

Could it be something daft like the settings on the switch have reverted from the power cut? (Had that happen before and made me chase my tail needlessly)

Yeh that's the first thing I checked, the core switch is totally intact, all settings including vlans and port trunks seem intact.

Did you ping the SAN with vmkping? As it's the vmkernel that talks to it, rather than the management interface. Was the switch config saved?

 

Could be worse, my HP SAN is still DOA. They are replacing a part tomorrow, that they have already replaced, that will still not fix it. Sigh.

No I will try that now thanks for that suggestion DMcCoy.

 

Still at a loss as to what's going on. Restored one of the SAN's to a previous good configuration from July and still have the same problem. I am learning towards the ESXi boxes now so am going to re-install the latest version of ESXi on one and see how it goes.

OK just going home now but used the VMKPING and can ping the SAN Network IP address of the 7110 but still cannot add it as an NFS Storage device

I've had this before. Remove any trunks and VLANS on the switch, ESX and the 7110 for the link between the ESX and the 7110 and drop to one network cable on the link. Do a full power down of ESX, 7110 and the switch, bring the switch back up and then the servers and storage.

Also check the time is in synch between the 7110 and ESX and that you have a route on the 7110 for the subnet you are using.
