Clockworks Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'm looking for some insight as to what to focus my studies on and what to master; Linux, Unix, Mac, Windows, Cisco, among the many other things. I'm only 23 so relatively young into this field and extremely curious about the pros' insights. So far, my current job as a Network Engineer deals with a Windows environment (Server 03/08) so I have some experience with that. Thank you for your time as I know it's a rather broad question, sorry. =/
Dos_Box Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 The answer to your question is.....yes. All of them, but prioratise Windows, *nix, networking. Or was it networking, Linux, Windows? No, no...got it....erm..no...gone. Truth be told, you'll have to learn all of them, some more than others depending on what it is your working with.
teejay Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 It really depends on what you want to do and what interests you. Network Manager roles tend to be jack of all trades, so you need to now everything! You could specialise in a specific area which you enjoy, which will then lead to probably higher paid jobs working in the private sector. So really, just get get stuck into all of them, if you find one you really enjoy, or find you enjoy a specific field then concentrate on that area.
teejay Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Oh, forgot to mention, especially if you want to specialise, add Prince II and possibly ITIL to that list :-)
Iosoma Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 i try to pick two things, one professional and one personal to learn. Give them a go for about a month or so to see if they stick. Sometimes the subjects can link together, like web design and coding. Also try to find a niche, virtualisation is a big one at the moment and also a pretty easy one to learn.
