Search for Updated Drivers Utility

Can anyone reccomend a 'free' utility that will search my PC and tell me what are the latest or even correct drivers. I have an oldish PC that requires a rebuild but don't have the driver disks and the manufacturer website is not much help as it lists all the drivers for all the version of this particular model.

Windows Device manager. Seriously they have put a huge amount of drivers into the Windows update catalogue which are accessable by right clicking the device in device manager, selecting update driver and allowing it to look online. Vista and above do this automagicly.

 

For most systems all you need is a working network card driver so that it can access the internet and you will probably get most, if not all of the drivers right off the net via this method.

Not sure of any *free* programs that would do this, but we use the PCI Vendor and Device Lists to get information about hardware that is "Unknown" to Windows. The PCI codes can be found under the details tab of a device in Device Manager.

 

Personally I wouldn't use an automatic driver installer. I believe this job is best done manually.

Try Double Driver. I've used it several times to copy drivers from one machine to another. It's a standalone utility and we all know just how useful they are! I'm not sure of any ways to check for the most up to date drivers other than those mentioned already. At least you know that the ones that you have work! Edited July 28, 2010 by Ignatius

Forgot about the driver packs, I'll give them a go.

 

Driver Packs did the job fine in the end, PC now up and running fine.

Double driver or driver backup - both available on the hirens disk if needed (assuming you are correctly licensed of course).
