newcareer Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Hi, I recently got a job in a school, I am new to SIMS, they were speaking about end of year and beginning of year procedures. They said they completed the EOY but wanted me to know about Beginning of Year Procedure. Please help me
creese Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 To be flippant, if they have done the EoYear then just login at the begining of the year. The only thing to be done would be to admit new pupils as they arrive (if that is what you do, wait until they turn up I mean) Edit: You don't think it is one of those Newbie wind ups. Like a skirting ladder. Go back and tell then you have to wipe the SQL clean.
John_Howarth Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Welcome to EduGeek! What kind of school are you working in (primary, secondary, etc.)? There are three things you can do to find out more: 1) Register on Capita's SIMS Support Net. You'll then have access to the latest End of Year documentation which will help you with processes for the start of term. 2) Contact your SIMS support service desk, either at your Local Authority, managed service provider or Capita, depending on your support arrangements. You'll find that they'll be more than happy to speak to you and point you in the right direction. 3) Once you've logged into SIMS, there is a Documentation button at the top of the home page. If you click on that, you'll gain access to all the SIMS handbooks, reference sheets and tutorials. Best of luck!
LosOjos Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 If you're in a secondary, this document from SupportNet might be useful (it's aimed at EOY, but also has some tips as to things to do on/before the start of the new academic year): GetStart_16972.pdf

newcareer Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 I will be working for a secondary school and would be dealing with the technical part of SIMS. Thankyou everybody, I will have a look at the documents
creese Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Technically in SIMS there is nothing to do. If the Pastoral structure etc. is set up, it is ready to go and all classes and years will appear on the first day of term. Timetables will be correct. The only thing is as I said which is admitting new pupils, which is not your job. I have never heard of a begining of year procedure in 8 years plus, before .Net you had to click on the year to change it to the current one but now it is automatic.
vikpaw Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Maybe it's just the way the school refers to the processes. The EOY docs mention a few things to do ready for the next year. Not sure if the post would be responsible for it, but in the new year as well as admitting all the applicants, you might be expected to set up new marksheets in assessment manager - some schools have a dedicated person for this but it could fall on your shoulders, also print off official register for previous year, tidy up SLG if you use it, and do housekeeping in SIMS.
newcareer Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 Vikpaw, Thanx for pointing them, I will try to find documentation on how to do them
