thanks.. im still trying to get this right in my head before i set it up.

How can I set up the .au location, so it is part of the .uk domain? Do i create a new .au domain and give it the same name as the domain in the .uk ? I just cant seem to get it right in my head how to add the new location.

They are all effectivly part of the same system so should all be part of the same AD structure (domain or forrest).

thats what I thought. So i would need to have the p2p vpn in place in order to join the new site to the existing domain?

But from what I can tell about the site to site vpn from the documentation @sukh suggested, it appears there needs to be a domain at either site already?

or am i reading it wrong?

nevermind got it.

But it says Im gonna need 2 network cards each end. How is that gonna work when I just have one network at each end. I cant have 2 network cards each end.

Is there another way to do it?

Not sure if this is of any use to you RabbieBurns:

High Availability Software | Disaster Recovery Planning Software | Double-Take Software

It's what we use for DR - our main office in Lon has an exchange server but just in case of a problem we can switch over to the exchange server in our NY office. We have a dedicated 50 meg link to the office just for replication. If we have to switch over all the clients need to do is re-boot their PC / E-mail device as when they next boot up the mail server changes will change automatically.

We tested it last week any only had a few minor problems - the main one being the BES server needed a re-start.

I havent managed to get the 2 sites linked properly yet. I need to spend some time doing that first. I was thinking of maybe putting an IPSEC enabled modem/router at each end to make it simpler rather than try to do it via software. I had openVPN working but I couldnt get it giving access both ways, only from one subnet could see the other but not vice versa.

@FN-GM - are you trying to install the server on a remote site or on the same site as the previous?

Just on the same site. I am thinking about giving more HA on our file server and exchange.

Thanks

Well for a start just install Exchange and all other hosts will see if. there is a very good article on MSExchange site around DAG (Database Availabity Groups) which will give your Exchange the HA you require. With regards to File Server HA you would probably need to look at DFS NameSpaces for HA on those.

Yes been looking at DFS on the file servers for home areas.

Something that seems to be a let down is the round robin. If one server is offline you won't get 100% connect ie DNS could point you to the wrong server.

Thanks.

Yeah true - ideally something would check to see if a host is alive before directing you there but nobody thinks before making these things!

Is there anything to get around this please? If we go down this route we will want something that will just work, IE the end user doesnt notice anything. Thanks.

OK so DAG will not be an option at the moment, because the existing server Exchange is on is only 2008R2 Standard, not enterprise, and so doenst include the failover cluster stuff..

Ive installed a new instance of Exchange 2010 with all the roles onto 2008R2 Enterprise, what do I need to do to move evertything onto this new server so I can wipe the old 2008R2 Standard and re-install with Enterprise?

Read this, Upgrading Windows Server 2008 R2 without media - Server Core - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

I don't see why you need to flatten and rebuild just to upgrade the OS especially as they are all the same code set?

Right I've finally got this set up. Windows server VPN between the 2 sites, Exchange installed on them both, DAG configured and both servers added to the DAG.

However when I try to replicate the database, it processes for about an hour and then fails with this message:

Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed.
Elapsed time: 01:17:17

PMG
Failed

Error:
Processing data for a remote command failed with the following error message: The WinRM client cannot complete the operation within the time specified. Check if the machine name is valid and is reachable over the network and firewall exception for Windows Remote Management service is enabled. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.

Exchange Management Shell command attempted:
update-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Identity 'PMG\EXCHANGE' -DeleteExistingFiles

Elapsed Time: 01:17:17

Admittedly the 2 sites are both on consumer grade ADSL which isnt lightnight fast, but the database is only about 1500mb so not sure why it keeps failing?

Would it not be more worthwhile setting your Virtual infrastructure up to use high availability? If you are virtualizing the servers then it is highly unlikely that the VM will have a wobble without the host/storage wobbling too, which more than likely means the other parts of your Exchange cluster will fall over at the same time. Sort your virtual servers to failover nicely, load balance the hosts and the like and you won't have to worry about setting up multiple Exchange boxes at all.

EDIT: Sorry didn't realize the majority of this post was oldish & you were well on your way to doing this!! That'll teach me to skim!
