znova Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Hello, things have certainly moved on since last I looked! Our home pc has just about had it, Sempron processor, no dedicated graphics card etc.. Things we use it for: Kids homework General Office Central storage point(photoes) However, we have now splashed out on a new camera which has hd video so might dabble in video editing. NO GAMES! Any thoughts? No more than 400 - 450 (might dig out some student discounts I've never used! Initially I was going to use my laptop but TBH desktops are much less likely to get nicked and I do cart my laptop around! Edited July 13, 2010 by znova spelling
john Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 How about something like this - Buy CCL Ace Pronto System from CCL - Online Retailer of the Year 2008, 2007 & 2006 for laptops, desktops and computer hardware it needs and OS (which you can choose from the side) and you can then add screens etc as needed
znova Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 I did look around. I was looking at i3 processor as it seems to perform better than amd offerings; however, not too sure if I'll see much difference? The i3 systems are a bit more expensive though.. the only few I found within my budget are here
hotwired007 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 i'm guessing that as your requirements are fairly low either an i3 or an amd equivalent would do... the i3 is only a dual core (hyperthreaded) and you could always get a cheap amd quad phenom...
hotwired007 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 how about this one... Zoostorm Desktop PC - Desktops | Ebuyer.com
broc Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 You can buy DELL refurbished systems (sometimes with slight cosmetic damage) from MCS Technology Ltd for example MCS Technology Ltd > (DNA015) Inspiron-TW 545 (Black Bezel)/Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz/4096mb/500gb/DVD-RW Drive/Windows Vista Home/Dell 3yr On-Site Warranty
znova Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 Thanks for all the suggestions! I had a rethink about the i3 processor so will now look at Core 2 Quads instead - I do like the look of that Zoomstorm! I have Win 7 from uni and some pc discounts I'll have to dig up so might be looking for a while yet!
znova Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 I think I'm going to go for this one here It seems to be a good bundle put together.
Dos_Box Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Give ICT Direct a bell. Often they have one-offs and special kit tha they don't put on the site. just ask Ric what he got his twin Xeon workststions for! And they'll give you a years warranty.
