admin$ on windows xp

I have a piece of software that needs access to the admin$ share on our pcs.

For some reason some pc dont have it turned on.

 

can any one suggest a way to ensure this is on on all pcs?

It will be the firewall blocking it by default, use group policy on your workstation policy and set it to allow the exceptions for the domain just like in this screenshot (not just the stuff in the red box, file and print + remote admin) . After a gpupdate or couple of reboots on the machines you should be able to connect.

You can also turn off all the administrative shares (C$ etc)? Are you finding that C$ works but admin$ doesn't or are neither working? If you setup a share (eg do net share win=c:\windows) can you access that share? If you can access a non-admin share then I don't think it's a firewall issue.

 

I thought there was a standard GP setting to disable admin shares but I can't find it! What it will do is set a value at HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters\AutoShareWks to 1 or 0 - take a look at that to see what's there.
