What does 'this computer will be used as a Sims SQL server' tick box do?

Hi all,

I am just about to move sims to a new server which has SQL already installed. Should I tick the box during simsinst 'this computer will be used as a Sims SQL server' or does this simple install a free version of SQL.

One other question will I have any issues with the new server being named something else and having a different ip?

Thanks for you time.

In regard to the server being called something else and having a different IP address, it's all fine as long as you ensure that everything which points to SIMS is changed.

It all depends on the way you've set it up though, if your workstation connect.ini's redirect to the shared S:\ drive then you'll need to change the connect.ini on the shared drive only.

You'll also need to move the DMS over and change the settings both using the DMconfig utility and SIMS.net.

Let us know how it's all set up and then we can advise accordingly.

HI,

Just Changed connect.ini (s:\Sims) to point at new server and changed sims.net/tools/setups/doc man server to 'computer name = new server name'. Is that correct?

Do I still need to use the DMconfig util you have mentioned?

Thanks

and to answer my own question

The document Server is important because it deals with reports and any documents attached to students. Knowing where it is is equally important.

By Default it gets installed at the SIMS Servers C:\ drive under "DocStorage" but most schools have modified this - to find exactly where your document server library is do the following:

On your SIMS Server open a command prompt and go to the directory the document server lives in:

Ususally - "correctdriveletter:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net Document Server"

From here run the command DMCONFIG

This will tell you the protocol used to connect, the port the service runs on and the directory it resides in (the port must be available past your servers firewall).

ok looks like i do need to use the DMconfig util. When I run it it says doc storage is on C but it should be D.

I have done a few forum searches but not found anything directly helpful. Can someone please help.
