move sims sql database to new partition

Hi folks

 

After a bit of advice for netman collegue.. He has a crockety old sims server running server 2000 and sql 2005 express and no money for new server. He asked how to move the sql 2005 databse onto a new partition on the same server (more disc space).. Has anyone done this and if so can you give me a step by step? or at least point in the right direction

You need to be moving/migrating to SQL Express 2008. I don't see it matters what partition it is on as long as you can map a drive.

 

Take a look a the migration utility, it might solve your/his/her problem.

That OS isn't supported anymore, this could be more trouble than it's worth. Discover will add an extra load to the servers at the end of the year, best advice is to replace it, or upgrade the OS.

Could always detach the database, move it and attach it again... This is done in the SQL management program, of course make backups! I would check with a SIMs user on this too... I don't work with it any more but a database is a database at the end of the day.

Migrate to SQL2008 would be best, you need to do it by the end of this year anyway. Not sure how Discover will affect the server performance, workstation without a doubt, server won't be that much (famous last words). Still what's the point of not using SIMS to it's full potential.

Use dbattach, it'll do a backup when it deattaches, plus it keeps Capita happy.
