Rebuild OS when insatlling a second CPU??

A quick question really, we have some HP Proliant ML350G6 Servers running Server 2003R2, They have 1 quad core Xeon processor and due to issues we're looking at installing a second processor. One of the team thinks we'll need to reinstall the OS when we do this, but the rest of us haven't heard of this, has anyone on here done this before and did you need to rebuild he OS, the server is currently running SQL 2005 on a workgroup licence if that make a difference.

As long as Server 2003 R2 uses an SMP install even when you only have one CPU, you shouldn't have issues adding another processor (I don't think). I think I've done it before with no issues but it was a long time ago. Isn't Server 2003 licensed per-processor? If so are you covered?

You should be fine, the original CPU is multi-core so it will already be using the multiprocessor HAL.

 

Liscencing should not be an issue for the OS unless you are using 2003 Datacenter edition as this is the only one liscenced per socket. Standard will support up to two sockets if I recall 2003 correctly.

 

SQL may be liscenced per socket so that could be an issue but it should detect them and use them without requireing a reinstall.
