SIMS recommended server spec

I can see a few threads on this issue but most talk about hardware rather than OS. I'd like to know what combinations of OS and SQL are available to me, can I go for 2008 R2 at this point as I'd like to go 64Bit.

 

I'm sure this should be detailed on the capita website but I've not used it before and I'm having trouble location it, if anyone has a like i'd be gratefull.

I have gone with Windows 2008 R2 but it isnt supported by Capita.

 

Our support provider SMIS have said that it will be ok to install 2008 R2 as they have at other sites without any issues.

 

It just isnt 'officialy' supported...

 

They do however state it should be SQL 2008 (AND NOT R2)

i think however, that most recent conversations have been about OS, not hardware.

as said, server 2008 R2 is not supported for SIMS, neither is SQL 2008 R2.

many are using / trialling, but it's up to you if you want to risk being told that Capita wont support you. Best to check with your local support team, or Capita if you go direct, which i doubt if you've not used the site.

Anyone got an idea when 2008 R2 might be supported, I don't need to build this box untill the summer hols.

rumour has it summer update onwards, but no official date. you'll defo need to do the SQL 2008 migration before they support Windows Server 2008, if that's what you were thinking.

Oh hang on let me get that straight I need to move from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 before making the move to Windows Server 2008?

 

We currently have SQL2005 on Server 2003 I wanted to migrate straight to SQL 2008 running on Windows Server 2008.

Yeah, I'd definitely migrate your data before you moved server. The Capita migration tool won't let you select the SIMS2005 instance on your old server and migrate it to a new SQL2008 instance on your new server. Both the new instance and the old instance have to be on the same server. Once you've got your data on SQL2008 running on Win2k3 you can then detach the database to transfer it over to the new server.

"Unable to get the registry keys for SQLBinnRoot or SQLData from the registry"

Capita don't support 2008 R2 on both server or SQL yet, and apparrently the are some issues, especially if you are using trusts in AD.

Support for Domains/Forest AD's in 2008 R2 mode is supposed to be Summer release, but support for 2008 R2 on the SIMS server itself there is no date for yet.

It's one of those things, do you take a gamble to make it easier for you to support by having all your servers on the same release, or do you play safe and stick with an O/S supported by Capita and go through the hassle of upgraiding it later, it's a tough call...
