[fog] HDD Issue

Trying to upload an image from a client (laptop) - and it's giving me a "BUFFER I/O ERROR"

 

Does anyone have any pointers on how to troubleshoot this? The image creation starts and then gives up and the machine reboots at about 17%

Have you tried a different HDD (different make / model) in the unit?

 

Have you gone though the driver troubleshooting yet? The driver troubleshooting can be found on the user guide.

I have got a fair few of these laptops to image, be a dream if I can get FOG working on them!

Sounds to me like you got a duff HDD - it's one of the risks, if there's any duff sectors on the drive it will stall the FOG image creation process and give all sorts of weird errors but nothing specific to tell you exactly what the trouble is. Try another one of the machines and I'm pretty sure it'll work fine

 

Had this happen to me before which wasted 2 days work I spent perfecting the new image I was going to use.

Please perform a zero write to the drive in question before imaging it. If the computer has a hidden partition and or a bad sector you will run into issues you mentioned.

 

Please also look into the manufacturers HDD diagnostics to perform a full test (seagate / maxtor / hitachi / WD / etc.)

 

you can also perform a zero write though their software most times.

 

p.s. I perfer dban to do my zero write and data security - Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe and Data Clearing

Did a zero write to the drive, rebuilt the system & still the image fails (same error)!
