I upgraded to 3.1 a week or so ago from a fully working setup, nothing has changed but the WSUS version but pretty much every PC fails to report back. Most are sitting at 1% and havent changed since the day I updated.

WUpdate.log on a sample PC says -

Anyway back onto the job in hand!

Have you checked you have the following mime types in IIS Chris?

.cab - application/octet-stream

.msp - application/octet-stream

.msi - application/octet-stream

.psf - application/octet-stream

Also in IIS try adding a multiple port identity for port 80 as well as the existing port 8530. Obviously this is only for the website that is currently using 8530.

So when it goes off to look for http://ip:8530//selfupdate/wuident.cab which lives in IIS under Default Website it cant get to it on port 8530, because that is assigned to the WSUS Administration website. If I assign the 8530 port to Default Website it stops it with a multiple port error.

Am I missing the obvious?

I'm not a genius with either IIS (some would say I'm not a genius with most things) but would creating an entry for selfupdate under the WSUS Administration website using the same settings as the Default Website entry be worth a try? Edited by ajs
IIS, not the International Space Station

Great minds think alike, I just tried that - the PC is now picking up updates and prompting me to install, but still showing as not reporting back... were close now :D

Twice in one week that someone thinks I have a great mind. Something weird must be happening in the world.

Anyway, in situations where PCs don't report back I've often taken a slightly brutal approach and deleted the PC from WSUS, renamed its C:\Windows\Softwaredistribution folder and then forced an update to get it to reregister with WSUS. More often that not it's shown up in the console pretty quickly and after a few reboot cycles as it does its updates, it reports back that all is well.

Of course, as long as it's picking up updates then the reporting issue can just be added to the infamous TODO list I guess :-)

And its now reported back!! Woooo!

Last question, will the clients all automatically update on its next scheduled cycle or will they all have to be forced?

I would suspect that if they have the same problem as the PC that's now working, things will just fall into place as they can now access the files they need :-)

Possibly wouldn't hurt to add "wuauclt /detectnow" to a startup script to try and coax them along but I don't think it's necessary.

I knew this would be IIS it just sounded right! The machines should report back on their next schedule I don't think a force will be needed.

Glad the issue is sorted Chris!
