Motherboard Problem..

At least that's what I think it is.

 

My friend's computer no longer does anything. When you switch it on the PSU and the CPU fans spin but nothing gets displayed on screen. Not even the post screen message.

 

I've checked the HDD on another computer and that's working fine. As a small test I took the memory modules out and the computer did not even beep once to tell me that there is no memory modules installed.

 

The motherboard is a GF7100P-M7S 6.0. Details can be found here.

 

Any ideas what I can do next?

I would test the power supply if you can.

 

It could still to be working, but may not be supplying correct voltages across the Motherboard.

 

Test with a known good PSU if possible.

You need to identify working memory and a psu. Remove the motherbaord from the case (it might be shorting out). Unplug hard drives cd roms etc.

Connect up the power supply and memory and turn on. (A screwdriver carefully placed to touch the 2 front panel pins).

As a final test swopping the cpu into a known working motherboard would identify a faulty motherboard.

I've seen a failed power supply cause the problem you're describing, so check that out.

I've tried doing everything you've guys mentioned and it would seem I can't test the PSU as it's 400W. I don't really want to tell my friend to buy a new PSU only to find out he doesn't it. I can't believe as the school's IT team we don't have the right tools or spare parts to do anything!

 

Guys, I appreciate the suggestions. It could very well be the PSU.

 

Just another query, are there different PSU's for different motherboards? How do you know which one would be suitable for it?

What's stopping you from testing it? a 250w PSU should power that motherboard for test purposes. All new PSUs should be 20+4 pin, so there should be no compatability problems.

I have a 240W PSU. The whole thing powers up but yet nothing gets displayed on screen. I also took it out from the box to no avail. Am I right to assume the onboard graphics is dead? Saying that, there's a DVI and VGA connection and neither worked. I don't even have a graphics card to try with as all the computers in school have onboard graphics.
