adding a 2nd server to a sbs domain

If one has a small business server 2003 standard server and wants to add a 2nd server, does it have to be a non sbs 2003 OS?

 

I have read that if you have 2 sbs servers on same domain the one that doesn't have fsmo roles will be shutdown.

 

Could you install say 2003 standard instead?

 

that way theres no 2nd sbs server and would allow ad replication between 2.

I believe you can only run one SBS box on the same network, but you can add additional non-sbs boxes (i.e. 2003 Standard Edition)

 

I'm sure I did this a few year back for a few companies........long time now since I deployed a few SBS 2003's

I was under the impression you can only have one SBS server acting as a DC. I think you can have another as a member server.

After waking my head I think yes you can add it as a member server...........Migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008....I did!, so yes you can add it as a member server.

You can't add another SBS box on to the same domain, whether it be 2003 or 2008 (unless performing a migration, in which case you get a 21 day grace period). You can however add as many other member servers or DCs as you like but the SBS box must hold all of the FSMO roles.

 

I have added multiple DCs to SBS networks in the past, usually for AD replication between branch offices.
