I've been looking at Concerto - it doesn't do video yet, although according to the blog it should be coming soon.

 

It's open source, and multiuser - you can set up feeds that users can submit text and graphics to, and moderate them before they're displayed. It's geared up towards a central server with multiple client machines connected to displays - but I'm looking at putting both on the same machine because we've only got a single display. (I'm not sure whether this is possible, but if you could display a web page as a screen saver, you could co-opt all the school's PCs into being digital signage! )

 

Old post I know but :

i like the look of Concerto but the Concerto instructions assume knowledge of Linux and go straight into "do this" "Load that". Does anyone have any step by step instructions on how to set the whole thing up from scratch?

I've not used Concerto but talking from Linux experience, I'd say that'd be a terrible idea anyway... it'd be much better if you learned how to do what it was asking you to do, rather than following a step-by-step guide, as there is very little chance there'll be a step-by-step guide to fix it if something goes wrong! That's the nature of Linux I'm afraid.

if you want pictures and video playing with a centeral place for teachers to dumb look at Win 7 with windows live gallery on then just change the folder redirection to a shared folder? dunno how often it updates but myabe worth looking at.

Thanks - I took your advice and started from scratch. Took me a day or two but I managed to install Ubuntu Server with GUI and then Concerto on top. Wasnt that difficult after all.
