Cache Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 More a personal request then anything else. Busy putting together plans for upgrading various parts of my computer and was thinking of an SSD drive. Are the Intel X25-M drives still the ones to go for or has something else overtaken them?
mac_shinobi Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 More a personal request then anything else. Busy putting together plans for upgrading various parts of my computer and was thinking of an SSD drive. Are the Intel X25-M drives still the ones to go for or has something else overtaken them? OCZ do a Z Drive which uses a PCI express slot and is bootable ( pretty darned expensive but darned fast ), I am waiting for Intel to release the 128 and 256gb versions of the X25 Extreme series PC Perspective - SSD Decoder Ring - an SSD comparison guide (Rev 2.3) 1
Arthur Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 (edited) If I was buying an SSD today I would get either the 160GB X25-M 'G2' (£328.01) or the 100GB OCZ Vertex 2 (£302.96). AnandTech has a review comparing both here. I have had my X25-M 'G2' for 10 months now and it has been rock solid. However, Intel's third gen X25-M will be released in around 5-6 months time. If you can wait a bit longer you will be able to get a bigger and faster SSD for less money. Edited May 29, 2010 by Arthur 1
Pottsey Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB are the fastest single drives you can get as far as far as I am aware, faster then the Intel drives and more space. With read speeds up to 355MB/sec and write up to 215MB/sec you need a SATA 6Gbps to get full speed out of the drive. The drive will cap out a SATA II port.
Arthur Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 I would avoid the C300 personally. There have been far too many issues with it (see below) and every time there is a firmware update, your data will be erased. This is a PITA especially since this doesn't happen with other manufacturers firmware updates. http://www.anandtech.com/show/3704/crucial-realssd-c300-firmware-part-iii http://www.anandtech.com/show/2974/crucial-s-realssd-c300-an-update-on-my-drive
