This is a copy of an email I sent out this mornng to the admins.

We need a camcorder for the various events this year, and in the future. It is fair enough to ’borrow’ a device when required, but I’d rather we had something we could call our own and we got familiar with. The requirement will be:

HD (either full or 720p)

USB connectivity

SD\HDD. No tape

Rechargeable batt

Tripod mount

Standard file formats only. No proprietary rubbish Optional if the device delivers in other areas)

Budget of £300 (we can go a little further is the device delivers the goods in heaps)

Any suggestions?

Although you didn't put on the spec, I would strongly recommend you get a camera with a mic input. Having an external mic can make all the difference at times.

Couldn't agree more. The wind noise on my Canon HF-S100 is terrible. My wife made a gag for it but it gets in the way of the manual control wheel, so I tend to stick a lavalier mic. in the ext. socket. Trouble is, this is a feature that is being left off many consumer camcorders.
