2008 R2 over 2008 - Print queues

Hi

Just wondering if I am correct in thinking there is no point moving to 2008 r2 over 2008 for print queues etc?

I cant find out if they added anything to r2 for printers.

If you've got 2k8 32 bit, as 2k8R2 is 64bit only expect pain.

I think your still able to deploy 32bit drivers I would expect but yet, unless there was a killer feature I am not planning to bother.

You can still add 32bit drivers for deployment to 32bit clients on an R2 server you just need to use the 64bit ones for the server itself. I don't think that there are any major improvements between the two but I have found my r2 server much better at talking to my 64bit clients than a 2003 one. As I never tried it on 2008 I can't make a comparison but I doubt that it would be any different to R2 in that regard.

its often finding drivers for r2 some hps that i find are common are non supported universal driver dont work etc unless you have 64 bit clients id rather given the option have the print server on a 2003 server (and as often as not i end up hyperving a 2003 r2 for servers its just easier. For instance in one school i have a hp colour laserjet 3500 (might be a 3550) and on teh server it can only print black and white though from 64bit win 7 stations and 32 bit xp it prints colour work that one out lol

Ah driver isolation is not included in 2008, interesting. I like driver isolation, it has meant zero restarts of the spooler service even with our mental mix of hp, Xerox and different kinds of Brother printers. This was quite a change from the old system where the spool service was scripted to restart just to cope. I do think the drivers have got better to though.
