Prevent the start menu freezing when it contains a dead shortcut?

Is there anyway to stop the start menu from freezing when it contains a shortcut whose target is unavailable?

Does unpinning it from the start menu help?

It freezes when you hover the mouse pointer over the start menu folder that contains the dead link.

I haven't got it pinned but I guess if I did it would freeze straight away when I opened the start menu.

Try deleting any desktop.ini files you can find within the Start menu folders. You'll have to look via Explorer to find them and they'll be hidden.

I was looking for something to use network wide, some kind of policy that does something like 'Do not check shortcuts before displaying' or 'Shortcut check timeout value = 0 seconds'.

Just in case someone is logged in, but something like the application server is somehow unavailable or restarting, I didn't want it to freeze their start menu.

in group policy, see the "Do not track Shell shortcuts during roaming" and the "Do not use the tracking-based method when resolving shell shortcuts" settings under "User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start menu and Taskbar"

Thanks, already tried that though.

It doesn't seem to have any effect on what happens as the start menu is displayed, only on what happens when you actually click the dead link.
