burgemaster Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Hi, A while ago 2 Rooms were swapped over with little if any notice to us!!!! So to get Art computers/printers etc back up and running I had to install a cheap mini Linksys 8 port Hub. They have 7 devices in total, 3 PCs, 2 printers, weather station and a wireless AP. My question is, is it worth me replacing the minihub for a spare HP procurve switch ?? For such a small number of devices would it be beneficial ? Could serveral of these on the network be maybe causing "network slowdowns" ? Thanks in advance
bossman Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 @burgemaster: Your network is as fast as your slowest device or a chain is only as good as its weakest link. Better a Switch than a hub and one that has a 1Gb upload speed and 1Gb ports: Similar to this spec: DGS-1016D: 16-port Copper Gigabit Switches - Network switches, gigabit switches, ethernet switch solutions, port switches and other network switches from D-Link, from D-Link Business
danrhodes Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Stay away from hubs like contagious diseases I say!
burgemaster Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 (edited) Thanks all, thats what I thought, I have a couple of spare HP 2124 100m procurve switches. Unfortunetly unmanaged. There is a 1gig network running to it, but these are 10/100 switches. Would It be worth swapping to a basic switch like this ? Currently funds are very short, Should I request money for a mananged HP 1gig switch capable switch, or even the one suggested in your link ? Thanks again Edited May 20, 2010 by burgemaster
burgemaster Posted May 21, 2010 Author Posted May 21, 2010 Found a ProCurve Managed 2626 with 2 x 1gig inputs. This should be perfect, now onto the other 8 x minihubs around the school. Thanks
