What do you think of my new SERVER? HP Pavilion s3732

Just taken on a new school which is going to be a interesting challenge! Primary Server is a HP Pavilion s3732, 3GB Ram, 500GB HDD, which came installed with Vista Home edition, but has had Windows 2003 server installed on it. Theres also an old server - Windows 2000 server installed, both are PDC and on different domains. Workstations are a huge mix of XP Pro, XP Home & Win 98, all of which are not on any of the domains, but rather in a workgroup. Added to that the admin network is connected to the curriculum and theres no security so pupils can access anything they want on either network!

 

Pupils use remote desktop connection to one server or the other to access the software and work direct on the server!

 

Additionally, there is not one computer in the whole school that has any Anti-Virus software on it... No internet filtering... No security updates... the list goes on.... quite how a professional IT company can install such a mess is beyond me

I've recently started visiting a Primary School that's in a very similar position. They've been running RM Classmate for a few years and last year started looking at moving away onto a proper domain etc.

 

Company they went with supplied them with a nice batch of about 20 Toshiba laptops running XP Pro and a shiny 2003 R2 server. However, for whatever reason, they decided that the server would just sit and host a few Exchange mailboxes and the laptops would all have automatic local admin logons and sit in a workgroup. They also didn't bother with any form of AV at all. :-)
