the windows licensing is all done via MVLS which is about £25per pc, as for carrying out repairs yourself i don't see why this is a problem....

 

Presumably the volume licenses are in addition to OEM licenses, otherwise they are unlikely to be valid.

Maybe thats just my thinking due to the fact our ICT team isnt particularly large (3 of us in a school of 1200~ pupils and 150~ staff).

 

Pretty much the same size as our school and the same amount of techies, we've done a lot of calculations in the past and it is saving us a lot of money, the only thing it's costing us is time and that's not something we're worried about

You probably don't want to let your management know that - it suggests you're overstaffed and staff are far, far more expensive than PCs!

How so? i wouldn't of thought it would suggest anything like that, we're managing our time well so that we can save money in our budget and build PCs of what we consider is a higher quality than we would recieve from a company prebuilt. If anything management should be pleased we're making the most of our budget and man hours!

At the school I work for in the States, we are a mostly Lenovo shop (~700) with a few Acers (~100). The Lenovos are a little more pricey than Dells or HPs, but don't give us to many issues. We pay a few hundred USD a year to be a Self-Maintainer so we get better access to support and parts next day usually. Plus we get paid for every warranty repair we do. So it all evens out.

 

We wipe the machines and put our custom image on.

 

A few years back I was helping out at a much smaller school that had a mix of about 10 different generic whiteboxes. It was a nightmare. HW issues, driver issues, warranty issues, you name it.
