Stumped with this one...internet connection problem over LAN

Right.

 

A week or so ago i got called down because a site a teacher had tried at home wasnt working on the school machine but had worked on her school laptop at home, turns out its because it had Realplayer on it. Problem being that she couldnt connect to school wireless network with laptop.

 

So i look at laptop and realise she has the evil intel wireless thing so i delete it and get a connection going again.

 

She cones back a few days later complaining that it wont now connect to her internet at home and that its cabled not wireless. So i have a look and it working offline, turns out that it was trying to dial up first and then working offline.

 

She just bought it back again said it worked for a day and now it looks as if its connecting but she has no internet.

 

Shes aware of switching the proxy on an off in internet options and she'd done that.

 

The only thing i can think of is firewall, apart from that im stumped cus it works fine at school.

 

Could that intel thing also have been handling her lan connection too?

I would presume her connection at home is a DSL router and not a USBmodem as this would probably give the effect of connecting at school via the LAN but not at home as the USBmodem would need to dial with the connection which you have probably deleted.

 

I could be wrong on this but this seems to be the only conclusion I could come to.

but thinking back i physically showed her the cable and she said it was she uses.....hmmmm

ask her to bring her "internet cable" in at least then you will know if it usb modem or just an rj45 to a router

Make a bat script to run with echo off, bung it in her startup folder - make it wait 10 minutes (or so) and then make it dump output from ipconfig, nslookup, ping and any other data into text files. Next time she comes to you, just take a look see what's going on. She does not even have to know about it.

Inform her about your competitive rates at sorting home internet issues out.....

Find the IP address of some random website (BBC, Google, Sky whatever). Ask her to stick this in the browser address bar rather than the www address & see if she gets anywhere? It may be a DNS problem. especially if the system is connecting.

How is the network configured on the laptop is it DHCP or static?

If static and her router is as you say a DSLrouter then it will be configured for DHCP and therefore not be able to obtain an IP address.

No, thoughts are good. It's DHCP....wish it was that easy

 

I doulbe checked and it is a DSL router as she showed me which port it plugs into.

Presumably other computers at home are able to connect to the internet? Daleus's solution sounds like the next best step.

Is her laptop permissions configured by GPOs from AD on the school server?

 

Or is it standalone?

 

I would be seriously looking at charging for this by way of external call to house at a premium also (for your own peace of mind) plus your time.
