BT Phoneline and ADSL

I'm considering getting a BT phoneline installed into the server room and getting ADSL so that windows update can actually run on the server and WSUS.

 

Any ideas how much this costs? What am I looking for?

 

Only thing I have found is this, which seems like the right thing.

 

Also who is the best ADSL MAX provider for business/schools? As this is not going to be used by the kids, 100% uptime isn't really required, but 99% would be nice. Otherwise the only factor is a useable bandwidth allowance. How much would be required for just windows update and some remote control? Anyone figured this out?

That one you're looking at looks like a literal phone line, so if you're planning on running it 56k, thats fine.

 

A decent leased adsl line will cost anywhere between £1-2000pa (ish, I think)

Business phoneline is fine - and as long as you're within 1.5 Klicks (ish) of an adsl enabled exchange any bog standard 2 meg adsl link should be more than enough for what you need it for. Something around £30 a month would cover it... I'd look at BT itself or Zen as a provider myself...

That is just for the phone line itself if you don't allready have one to run the adsl off.

 

You will also have to buy the adsl service to install on top of that.

 

BT business one is £58.50 p/m for network version.

We have no BT owned phone lines here, they are another company, thats why I was enquiring about getting a BT line installed.

The exchange is a few hundred metres away just outside the school gates.

 

BT offer shite caps thats why i'm asking elsewhere and i know they wouldnt go with a reseller like i have at home (EntaNet c/o UKFSN )

Well apart from their lowest offering as a business package the other two are "unlimited".

 

I'm looking at getting an adsl line installed to the server room next year for me.

zen internet is the most reliable connection i've ever had but they're a bit pricey. They've won awards for customer service for years.

AFAIK zen don't do any traffic shaping, least I've not noticed any. Because I had my account for ages now they don't cap me either - but I think they do on new accounts.

i had an uncapped unshaped 2mb account but new accounts and upgrading to max are capped. i couldnt afford it anymore and had to move to f2s ~ not half as good; capped and shaped....but encryption gets past shaping

A £25/month 8Mbit DSL/50GB cap from f2s is better than a £35 8Mbit/20GB cap from Zen in my opinion.

I'll stick with my 4Mbit unlimited from NTL - they are playing with shaping - but most of the time I get the full whack - not bad for currently £12pm
