Last night our server did its critical updates (the only ones I will allow to automatically update, and then restart the server at 9pm if it updates). This morning I came in to find that it hadn't booted at all, and infact wont even show me whats wrong. Nothing shows up on the monitor, despite it being turned on (not even the POST screen shows). And now an error light has shown on the server.

I have NO idea what the problem is, but it doesn't want to play ball! *GRRR*

Anyone got any ideas?

have been putting on latest critical updates with no problem - so it sounds like a hardware fault - need to look at error lights and then look on internet to see what they mean for that model if you don't know

If it is showing an error light it sounds like it may be hardware related rather than software, perhaps it was a component that was weak and did not survive a reboot. What kind of server is it, is it a general warning light and are there any other internal error lights that may be able to help track down the issue.

I would suggest pulling all power to it 10 minutes or so first thing to see if you can starve the problem out. If this works you may then be able to see the logged error in the integrated managment log viewer or bios depending on the type and age of the server involved.

Could be the thermal paste between the heatsink and the CPU itself, I have had that before. Grab some arctic silver thermal compound and cleaner to remove the old paste then apply some new stuff and it may sort it.

It's funny how a faulty aircon unit can kill a network :D We had an issue where we had a general power outage in the area which seemed to break the aircon unit. After power was restored the aircon failed to cool the air, temperatures rose to silly heights, server fans kicked into overdrive so much that they drained the UPS (Still recovering from the power outage) which then tripped the main fuse to the server room and down goes the network again.

We are having the aircon upgraded but the school faces a problem in that it needs the electrical supply to the school to be upgraded before we can add any kit such as aircon units to anywhere in the school.

Anyway - the result was a broken PSU in an old server which is hardly used - so we survived but it could have been a lot worse.

This happened to us last year with the air con failing. It started just blowing hot air and the making the room unbareable to be in.

The head said we couldnt get a new one installed...

So we put it to her that you either spend the 5k on a new unit or in excess of 60k for new hardware...

We soon had a new unit and the old aircon got repaired aswell...

So a room about 3 metres square has 2 air con units.

The servers did need to be turned off for an hour or so to stop the fans trying to spin to the moon though...
