Can anyone tell me if by doing disk to disk copy with either Acronis or Ghost on a W2K Server will copy across shares and permissions.

 

Cant do it with Tape Drive as too much data for tapes

I highly doubt it. You'd need a Ghost or Drive Image type program that worked within Windows. Mapped network drives are initialized in Windows, not in DOS, as Ghost runs in.

 

You can't run Ghost and Ghost over the network, but you can run Ghost and transfer the resulting .GHO file over your network, easily.

yes ghost works fine as it clones the drive and drive shares are stored in the registry i think. But it definitely works ive used it on 2k and 2003 servers with no problems before

Using the proper version of Acronis will also do it correctly - i.e. Acronis Enterprise rather than Home. I highly recommend it well over and above the usual Ghost/BESR solutions.

I'd use Ghost, it will copy the disk correctly and maintain all shares and permissions.

Hi Guys

 

just an update and for future use. I succesfully cloned the data drive from a w2k3 AD server retaining all permissions and shares with Acronis Home. 60gb of data in about 30mins. Tested and all works a treat.
