Hey all

 

Is it possible to link a 2 adsl routers together? In other words.. i have got 2 wireless adsl routers and am wondering if the router that provides the internet connect can give the other router a connection through wireless so it can be used as a switch in another part of the building??

Its a long shot i know, but it is worth a try

What you are thinking of is a wireless bridge but when used in this most the 2 devices forming the bridge will not server wireless clients.

 

Or possibly set the second one up just as a client of the first.

 

Depends on the particular models you have, some more info please!!!

right, have got a 3com wireless ADSL router and am wanting to connect to the main netgear router which is providing the internet wireless but use the 3com router as a switch only but provide the computers attached to the 3com router with the internet. Can it be done??? and what settings do i need to input?? i read that the 3com router has to be on a different subnet mask to the netgear router

Any security set up on the netgear wireless router? what particular models as they may have different capabilities to other 3com or netgear ones.

 

If you set the up as a wireless bridge your netgear won't be able to serve wireless internet to any other clients.

 

If you set the 3com up as a wireless client then the netgeard could still serve other wireless clients.

Yeah on the 3com router there is a wep 128bit security as there is on the netgear, i presume that both keys need to be the same? The 3com is an office connect 11g and the netgear is the DG843PN.

Im willing not to give the 3com router wireless access to any other devices as these will be connected with a cable.

So how do i go about setting the 3com router as a client on the netgear... thats the bit that is puzzelling me???

I can't find that model listed on the netgear.com website.

 

If they both support Wireless Distribution System WDS then you could use that it basically lets one device act as a repeater for the signal from the other.

 

If you set them up as a bridge the Netgear will not be able to service Internet connection to any other wireless clients.

Looking at the downloadable spec sheets I can't see any features that would help you acheive what you want.

 

The netgear doesn't appear to be usable as a bridge.

 

This may be because they are designed as adsl wireless routers rather than just wireless access points.

I used to use 2 buffalo WAPS for this, but I think you'll find it easier if you separate your internet gateway from the bridging.

 

Both my WAPs still served the "regular" purpose, giving the entire house (a 3 storey terrace) wireless cover and bridging 2 wired nets.

They would do if using WDS mode to do the bridging but in true bridge mode they will only talk to the other endpoint.
