amocompltd Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Just upgraded from 2k3 to 2k8 R2, all the clients are XP, the school had desktop redirection enable to show the same desktop for all the pupil users, I cannot get this to work on the 2008 box, any idea's or tips that can be the problem. I have set the paths etc it GP User > Folder Redirection > Desktop but it still refuses to work. Idea's anyone.
6Foot2 Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 We have this working under a similar setup. I can check all the details tomorrow and let you have any pointers I can glean from our system. The biggest pointer I can give you [notwithstanding our current IE8 issues] is that we have broken our policies up into broad modular units: Desktop Policy Microsoft Office 2003 Policy Microsoft Office 2007 Policy Allowed/Denied Applications I think you get the idea. The theory is that one large policy is easy to mess up while little modular policies are easier to work on [hopefully] We had a few problems setting it up getting the order of the policies right for our system and [until very recently] it has been working very well. This approach might help you also?
Gatt Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 In the Desktop Redirection dialog, click the settings tab There is an option to apply the policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 OS's
amocompltd Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Cheers Guys, I am back on site this morning to join 70 Laptops to the domain, should be fun (not). I will look again at this desktop re-direction issue, and see if I can solve it.
macdaddy Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 The event viewer of the client machine would be the first place to look. Our issue was the client side extensions. Win XP SP1 and SP2 do not normally have the correct client-side extensions in SP3 which was brought out to align with Vista/Win 7/2008. So we did not have to manual touch all our XP SP2's we created a script and through AD ran it to install at the computer level. If this is your problem go to WolfTech - Active Directory/Documentation/Clients & Deploying Preferences. If you have any questions on how to set this up let me know and will be happy to assist.
