HI

This has had me chasing my tail recently.

Im thinking about implemementing a Terminal Server at my primary school, and use the Web Apps feature for the users to run software like MS Office etc. but Im not sure what licensing is involed my experance of TS + licensing is limited.

Would I need?

1x Server 2008

X x Termal Server Licenses (One per user, been told thats only £3ish)

1 x Office licence

Office is tricky, unless it has changed recently then it is only per machine licensable and so you need a license for each and every machine that you are running it on at which point unless you a running linux clients you may as well just have it installed locally. I think Office 2010 is scheduled to make this situation a bit better but I am not certain of the specifics.

The CALs only cover the connection to the TS server you would need to consult the license agreements for each bit of software that you have to see how they need to be licensed to be legal while running under TS. As to other software if it is only internal then a site license may cover it however if it is avalible externally then depending on wording of the agreement you may need a different license. It all depends on the agreements you have with the software publishers.

I knew Other software could be tricky depending on supplier etc, Ive been told that with office you only need the one license, as your only running it on the one server, but its being accessed by muliple users??

No, you have to have a license for each client machine connecting. So, if you have 200 people connecting to the server, you need 200 licenses.

Looking at I think you need a Volume Licensing for Office etc, seams I was miss informed last week, though it sounded to good to be true.

When you say "Web Apps", are you talking about a TS client that works inside a web browser or the new web-based Office 2010?

Had traing the other week, and the trainer refered to it as "Web apps" he added some programs to a list on the server,

the clients then wend to htpp://server/ts and the applications where listed you double clicked on them up they poped.

the examples used where Calc, paint and office.
