6Foot2 Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 I use GoogleMail and Google Documents. OK. I don't collaborate with any other Google users but if I could get our school to think about it, well the things we could do! And no licence fees for Office... SimpleSi Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 At the moment, the one thing my teachers and pupils can still use a computer for if the network/internet fails is document processing. That the minus regards Simon

That the minus regards Simon How often do you get such outages? How long does it take you, generally, to recover?
SimpleSi Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Well - at one school at the moment - I have 20 netbooks net connections failing practically every lesson I'm just pointing out that it shift more dependancy onto networks/internet working. And whereas I have some ability to ensure local net reliability (even when I'm failing to do so!) - I have no control over internet connection (or the internet itself of course ). regards Simon PS Recovery time can be half a lesson
6Foot2 Posted April 12, 2010 Author Posted April 12, 2010 Well - at one school at the moment - I have 20 netbooks net connections failing practically every lesson Should you be looking at the reasons for the failure there? All I am saying is that as time goes by The Internet will become a bigger part of our lives [in many ways] Surely we should be embracing that rather than appearing to be worried about it. Yes there are issues. But the networks we have now have issues. I would say that there is no 'ideal' solution but looking forward collaborative working seems to be the way things are going now.
SimpleSi Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Should you be looking at the reasons for the failure there? Oh - should I? - that never occurred to me - ta. I'll get onto it.

Thats only workable once you have a stable connection. Yes, if you're in the position where you have that then wonderful - however the last time I had an LEA make infrastructure changes we had weeks of outages and poor performance. Real performance gains only happened 8-12 months after the 'upgrades'. Even working in business now we're at the mercy of some fool at the Olympic site chomping through a fibre bundle. I'd hate to be the person advocating web apps only for something like that to happen. the same with all 'cloud' services. 1
