Questions re linking home drives to VLE file access - how are you filtering content?

Say you're thinking of linking student home shares to your VLE to allow easier file transfer between home and school (our is currently a separate storage area).....

 

How do you prevent / detect the kid(s) who decides to upload the pr0n folder from his home computer into school? I know we could use pink filters, but IME they're either unreliable or have a rubbish signal to noise ratio.

unfortunatly for this you need to change behaviour not control it.

 

Students need to be made aware that they are responsible for content on their usernames area and the consquences of inapproriate matterial being discovered. Also as they are minors parents need to be made fully aware that legal action may be taken if students are found to have uploaded matterial that may be of interest to the police. I once had to get our a full scale investigation started because a student had images download from his phone of a young girl.

 

In short you school aup has to be up to date, SLT made fully aware of the risks and students told about the expected behaviour.

 

It is an arms race to try and fully filter content coming from uncontrolled sources and the other side has a bigger army.

if using 2003 r2 or later you could set up blocks stopping them saving videos etc

Yeah, BTDT too. I'd like to avoid having to do the "investigate in glorious technicolor and print out a sample set for parents" again if possible. Our lot aren't bad, it's the "random idiot child that does it, spreads it across a shared area and other kids grab it to their homedirs" problem and the cleanup required in the aftermath.

I was thinking more about the image collection - .flv from the usual video sites would be obvious (it's a soft quota on the fileserver, but we do investigate sudden media jumps). We can't stop them saving videos because video creation (animated shorts usually) is part of the curriculum.
