I now have 3 servers, one of which is a Win 2008 R2 that was introduced into the domain today.

In the IPv4 properties of the LAN connection, which should be the preferred DNS and which should be the alternate?

The preferred is showing as the primary DC to Win 2003 server and the alternate is pointing to itself as 127.0.0.1. Is this right?

So would you put the preferred as another DC that handles DNS and the alternate pointing to itself, or the other way round?

Oh, and would you use 127.0.0.1 or use the actual IP address it has?

Yes, put your prefered DNS as your PDC and then put the Secondary as your BDC, you can also specify your local loop back address in the Advance TCP/IP settings section, Properties -> Advanced -> DNS.
