Techie101 Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Hi all I have a problem with start menu folder redirection. Now everything worked fine with no problems, until we bought new pc's. The suite only had 8 systems and they were all pretty slow. Now we have 33 systems which are alot faster. Now this has caused a problem with the start menu being redirected. Most users have to log on and off again for the start menu to appear. I have googled this and came up with the following, tried what they suggested but nothing works - Information About The Windows Registry Value "SyncForegroundPolicy" Description of the Windows XP Professional Fast Logon Optimization feature Windows XP Professional Fast Logon Optimization - KiXtart.org - official site The above articles mention this value "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" but on the 2000 server we have that value does not exist! So I was wondering if there was another way to customise the start menu, one for pupils and one for teachers. What I want to avoid is constantly going around all the computers in school and adding shortcuts locally, doing it from on shared folder is a lot less work. thanks all
elsiegee40 Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Let's start with some technical detail here: What OS (version of Windows) are you running on your server? e.g. Windows 2003 SP3 What OS are your unning on the client PCs? (both the new ones that don't work and any other kit you have)

(both the new ones that don't work and any other kit you have) Server OS is Wndows 2000 server with service pack 4 and all updates Clients are all Windows XP Service pack 3 and all updates (the old clients were the same) Just a vanilla install, nothing fancy, DHCP, DNS, AD
srochford Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Download the group policy management console (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0A6D4C24-8CBD-4B35-9272-DD3CBFC81887&displaylang=en) and install it on an XP machine and use that to manage your policy settings. There were loads of new policy settings introduced with XP and I think that the wait for network at logon was one of those which is why you can't set it with the Windows 2000 adm files I've now completely forgotten how you do this but when you run GPMC there's an option to add the local adm files which will already be on the XP machine to the server (it doesn't matter that it's a 2000 server - all it does is store the files, it doesn't do any processing on them) You should then be able to set the necessary setting and, hopefully, your folder redirection will work. 1
