WHO GIVES A ****???!!!!! Get a life! (then keep it to yourself, for heaven's sake)
creese Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 I seem to recall Stephen Fry on QI suggesting that bog standard was a corruption of the term "Box Standard". The story was that in the pre-war era, toys such as Meccano were sold in two standard sets, known as Box Standard and Box Deluxe. He further suggested that the Box Deluxe still exists in a corrupted form in everyday English... This has already been declared a BBC myth. To be honest it doesn't make sense.

Daps (Somerset), Plimsoles (Yorkshire) I moved around a lot when I was young and seemed to have to learn an entire new vocabulary every time we moved! You should have tried joining the army at 15 (a non regional regiment/corp). The first couple of years was like learning several new languages.

We had a PE teacher called 'Dapper' Jenkins, not because he dressed well but was prone to using a dap on those not fast enough to avoid it.
