How do I enable the right click function in Windows?

Long time reader (I'm a teacher) but not a regular poster.

 

Simple qn, our computers by default don't let us right click on any program which is pretty annoying especially when copying pictures/copy and paste as you can imagine.

 

Our technician (who has loads to do) can't remember where the setting is to re-enable this - it was de-activated many years ago but we can't remember how to re-active it.

 

Can anyone enlighten us where in the registry settings are to enable context menus etc?

 

And apologies for what is a simple question, and I hope a simple answer!

It is probably done through group policy.

 

On a machine with admin pack installed (or a DC) go to start, run and type gpmc.msc

 

The group policy, if i remember right, is in Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer and disable Remove Windows Explorer’s default context menu

Look for a gpo with this setting applied: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\Remove Windows Explorer's default context menu

 

Also there is one for the taskbar if you need that: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove access to the context menus for the taskbar

One caveat though - you may want to sort it out so that staff can right-click, but students cannot- so look for a staff policy rather than a general one
